TODAYS WORSHIP

A FEW THOUGHTS ON TODAYS READING...

Most have an insatiable desire to be liked by others. As Christians, this is also true. We should not go out of our way to be confrontational or divisive, but when someone from the world asks us a question on our stance which is clearly discussed in Scripture, a decision must then be made: do we avoid answering, do we agree to something that we don't believe in so as not to offend, or do we speak what the Scripture states and accept the consequences. In Christian circles it’s fairly easy to be bold, but what do we do when in the world. Lauren Daigle, Christian worship artist, is exploding in the music industry, and making the crossover to the secular audience. Recently when asked about homosexuality, she responded with, "You know I can't honestly answer on that...I have too many people that I love, that are homosexual. I don't know. I actually had a conversation with someone last night about it and was like, 'I can't say one way or the other, I'm not God.'" The pastor of Hillsong Church in NYC, Carl Lentz, avoided answering the question while on "The View", whether or not abortion is a sin. He responded after the backlash of avoiding this question, with a tweet, stating that though he believed abortion to be a sin, he felt the weight of the fear of losing the ear of many non-Christians who he would otherwise minister to, concluding his tweet with, "I encourage you to do likewise."

We’ve read on multiple occasions how pivotal Aaron was. He was by Moses' side during the confrontations with Pharoah, often serving as his mouthpiece. He witnessed God's miracles firsthand. We read in Exodus 29 how Aaron and his sons were chosen to be the first priests of Israel. We see the conflict arising in Exodus 32:1, "Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, "Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him." Aaron should have immediately responded in defense of Moses, but instead he asks for items from the people and we see what transpires in 32:4-6, "And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, "This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!" So when Aaron saw it , he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord". Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." Aaron caring more what the people thought and would do to him compromises and creates a false idol. Once Moses comes back and publicly condemns what occurred, now fearing what his brother might think, we see Aaron now lying. Moses asks Aaron in 32:21, "What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?" Aaron concludes his convoluted answer with a lie in 32:24, "And I said to them, 'Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.' So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out."

We will probably not become the public figure that Aaron was, or more recently that Lauren Daigle or Carl Lentz are. But as we continue in our walk with God, being ambassadors of heaven while citizens on earth (Philippians 3:20), we will all face these questions if we are living out the Christian faith. If we hide our faith, then these questions might never surface, but this is in disobedience to God. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven." People should not have to guess if we are Christians, by His actions through us and by His Word which should come forth from our lips, we should be polarizing in our stance. God's position and the world's position are often diametrically opposed to one another. When asked, more often than not, God in His Word has already clearly given His stance and His answer to life's most difficult questions. The question really comes back to us, whom do we fear? As Jesus said in Matthew 10:28, "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."
